Joy Harjo

Join us for an evening to celebrate U.S. Poet Laureate and Tulsa Artist Fellow Joy Harjo‘s recent appointment and the release of her newest book of poetry “American Sunrise.”

The evening will include a musical performance and readings of “An American Sunrise,” as well as past works.
Books will be available to purchase with a book signing. The celebration will culminate with music and dancing.

Free and open to all. Light refreshments will be available.

ABOUT JOY HARJO // Joy Harjo, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, has published eight books of poetry. Her most recent collection of poetry Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings was named the American Library Association’s Notable Book of the Year. Her awards include the prestigious Ruth Lily Prize from the Poetry Foundation, the Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Tulsa Artist Fellowship. Her memoir Crazy Brave won the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Non-Fiction. She has produced four award-winning music albums including Winding Through the Milky Way for which she was awarded a NAMMY for Best Female Artist of the year. Harjo performs extensively nationally and internationally, including most recently in Camaiore, Italy. Harjo is a founding member of For Girls Becoming, an arts mentorship program for young women of her tribal nation. The program is expanding to include traditional arts mentorships for all members of the nation. In June 2019, Joy was appointed the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate.

The evening is jointly sponsored by Booksmart Tulsa, Magic City Books, Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and Tulsa Artist Fellowship.
